How to Build a Simple Stone Well

Here is an easy well we built, this is a simple idea for early game or teaching kids how to build with common materials. For raw materials only cobblestone and vines are needed. You will need a bucket to add the water and torches if you want to light it up like we did. If you do not have vines to make the mossy cobblestone you can use regular cobblestone and always swap the blocks later to add the mossy texture.

UPDATE: There is a video of this build now posted here – Simple Stone Well Build Video

Beginner Tips

Note for finding vines – Vines can be found in multiple biomes including swamps, jungles, oak/dark oak forests, and on several structures such as pillager outposts or woodland mansions. Use shears or a silk touch enchanted axe (Bedrock only) to harvest the vines. If vines are hanging start at the bottom and work your way up. Cutting a vine that has other vines hanging from it will result in only getting a single vine instead of the whole chain. It’s easy to forget until you cut the top one and watch the rest go poof…

Simple Stone Well in Minecraft Plains Vilage

Easy to build well idea that uses basic stone available early in the game.

Materials

Raw Materials Needed – 64 (1 stack) Cobblestone, 21 Vines, 12 Torches, and 1 Water Bucket.

Base materials for building stone well in Minecraft survival mode.

Use a furnace to create smooth stone and then craft 32 Stone Bricks.

Once you have 32 Stone Bricks you can begin adding the vines to both the Cobblestone and Bricks at the Crafting table. You can adjust your mixture to suit your area and style, for ours we made 12 Mossy Cobblestone and 6 Mossy Stone Bricks.

You will have some extra walls since they craft in sets of 6 and you will only need 8. For the build you will need –

8 Cobblestone Stairs
8 Cobblestone Walls
4 Cobblestone Blocks
24 Stone Brick Slabs
12 Stone Brick Stairs

Beginning the Build

For the build you will start by setting your four corner blocks like this-

Next you will set the cobblestones stairs.

Then the walls as posts in the four corners.

To place the stairs around the top edge start at one post and work your way around. I use dirt to build a platform to work from but if you have access to a Jungle then scaffolding makes builds much easier.

Once the stairs are wrapped around the top edge fill in the center opening with 4 brick slabs.

Now to light the area dig out a trench 1 block deep all the way around the well. Then dig the dirt blocks from under the stairs and an extra 1 block deep hole at each corner.

Place torches under all 8 stair blocks and then 1 in each corner hole as shown here.

Then place the stone brick slabs as upper slabs all the way around the well.

At night the light will shine through the slabs and stair blocks keeping the entire well area well lighted.

Completed Build

Now that the well is completed use a shovel and bonemeal to make a path with grass and flowers around the well. Any extra mossy cobblestone can be made into slabs or stairs and used to decorate the area around the well and along the path.

If I missed anything please let me know and I would be happy to update the post to include it.
