Building the Keep on the Borderlands in Minecraft

Adventure Module to Minecraft

After building the ruined zombie tower and playing it with the kids a few times I decided I wanted to build a kind of adventure map for them to play on. I practiced with a few towers that had puzzle locks and traps and we had a blast, which led me to the latest project.

The first RPG I ever played was Dungeons and Dragons with my older brother. Since I am the youngest there was a 10 year gap between us but he helped me learn the basics and it was a blast. The adventure module he ran was called The Keep on the Borderlands, and I had no idea it was one of the most popular D&D adventures ever made. It has even been updated to multiple later versions for people to continue playing years after it’s first release. Since I have so many memories of playing this module I decided I want to build the entire keep and the Caves of Chaos as an adventure in Minecraft for my kids to play through.

Plan for the Keep and Caves

I am building the main keep and village in our survival world with the Mansion, mainly because I wanted a castle there anyway. I plan to start the caves in survival as well but just due to the shear size I am not 100% if I will build the full Caves of Chaos there or copy it over to a creative world to allow better mobs and traps to be added. That way I can keep it more true to the original adventure module design and make it more challenging.  Either way I plan to then make that into an Adventure map and put it up for download.

The original module left most of the design and description up to the DM and players imaginations, but I am going to build it out as close to the maps from the original B2 module as possible. I also have a copy of the novel version and am using the descriptions from there to aid me in giving it more life. I do have a few textures I plan to use but they will be slight adjustments to the vanilla versions rather than something completely custom. That way it will look good in vanilla or with the texture pack.

I’m not sure how long it is going to take to build it all out but am definitely excited. It’s going to be a whole new challenge but also a fun way to share a childhood game with my kids. To begin the journey I made a custom painting and put it up for inspiration. Next up will be laying out the main buildings in the outer area of the keep.
